$6.6M Awarded to Hawai’i Education Agencies

The Hawai’i State Department of Education has received a $6.6 million grant from the United States Department of Education for use in supporting the improvement of college and career outcomes for students in Hawai’i and citizens.

Grant money awarded will be used to support Hawai’i DOE educators and staff in using data to effectively support students in the classroom.

“The use of metrics have proved beneficial in guiding teachers, leaders, and state offices in focusing our educational efforts to ensure that students are reaching their full potential,” said HIDOE Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi. “This grant will be used toward school-level training and help boost our strategic efforts in preparing students for success after high school.”

Collaboration between HIDOE and Hawai’i P-20 Partnerships for Education will take place to develop reports and information through the Hawai’i Data eXchange Partnership, which is a data system that links information from infancy through early learning, K-12 and postsecondary education, and the workforce.

On a larger scale, the efforts between HIDOE and Hawai’i P-20 hope to provide information and reports across the state’s education and workforce sectors to identify and reduce achievement gaps by providing support.

“We are pleased to be working in partnership with the HIDOE on using data to inform program improvements for all of our keiki. Meaningful data analysis gives us an understanding about what our students need from early education on to be successful in college and future careers, as well as to be contributing members of Hawaii’s community,” said Karen Lee, Executive Director of Hawai’i P-20.

During the first grant round, there were a total of 43 applications, and 16 of the 43 were grant recipients.
