Coast Guard Urges Caution During Tsunami Advisory

The United States Coast Guard is warning the public to use extreme caution and prepare for possibly dangerous ocean conditions early Thursday morning.

A potentially small tsunami is expected to reach the state, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, following Wednesday’s 8.3 magnitude earthquake that struck off the central coast of Chile. There is possibility that minimal tsunami waves between one to three feet could begin to impact coastal areas just after 3 a.m. Thursday.

Weather conditions may appear good, however, the strong currents and surf are described as potentially hazardous, and the Coast Guard warns that even the best swimmers could fall victim to strong waves and currents.

Coast Guard officials are urging swimmers and beach goers to stay away from beaches until officials deem it safe to return.

The Coast Guard has prepared for potential search and rescue cases generated from any waves and are working closely with local and state first response agencies.

In addition, mariners are being asked to secure their boats and boating equipment. Owners of small boats may wish to remove their vessels from the water.
