HPD Weekly DUI Statistical Breakdown

Twenty-two motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways between Sept. 7 and Sept. 13. Of the 22 arrested, six were involved in traffic crashes and one was under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.

So far in 2015, a total of 743 DUI arrests have been made. The number is a 11.4 percent decrease from last year’s number of 839 arrests during the same time period.

Major accidents are down by 7.9 percent, compared to last year. So far in 2015, 1,043 major accidents have taken place, compared to 1,132 at this point in 2014.

Traffic fatalities have remained up by 66.7 percent, compared to one year ago. Fifteen traffic fatalities have occurred on Big Island roadways. At this time in 2014, nine traffic fatalities had occurred.

Of the nine 15 fatalities, HPD reports that six were related to drugs and three were caused by a combination of drugs and alcohol.

Authorities will continue to maintain roadblocks across the island.
