Man Charged After Stealing King Kamehameha Statue Spear

Former Oahu man William Roy Carroll III, 31, who was arrested on Thursday in connection to an incident involving the stolen spear from the King Kamehameha statue over the weekend, was charged on Friday.

The Hawai’i Police Department reports that Carroll, who has no permanent address, was charged at 1:20 p.m. Friday with second-degree theft, third-degree theft, and second-degree criminal property damage.

Carroll’s bail was set at $11,000. He remains at the Hilo police cellblock pending his initial court appearance, scheduled for Monday.

Between Saturday and Sunday, the top portion of the King Kamehameha Statue, located at Wailoa State Park, was stolen. Police recovered the spear tip in bushes behind the statue on Tuesday.
