Falling on every first Monday of Septemeber, the holiday celebrates the United States’ labor force. The holiday’s origins are rooted in the late 1800’s, where Labor Day began as a celebration for the working force of America. In 1894, the holiday became federally recognized.
As the unofficial mark of the end of summer, people across the country spend labor day picnicking, backyard barbecuing, or heading to the mall for the latest sales.
The following closures are in effect for Labor Day 2015, Sept. 7:
Public schools, universities, and college campuses.
Local, state, and federal government offices, including DMV and courts.
United States Postal Services, including mail delivery and post offices.
All Hawai’i State Public Library System libraries.
