Kilauea Summit Update – 7/20/15

A slight level of deflation has been recorded at the summit of Kilauea over the past 24 hours. Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that the deflation was minuscule, making it almost insignificant in readings.

Slight fluctuations in lava lake levels within the Overlook crater have been reported, however, no overall change has been noted by HVO.

Seismic levels remain at background levels. Over the past several days, small earthquakes near the south area of the summit caldera have reported. They have also been scattered in the area of the rift zones and across the volcano’s south flank.

HVO continues to report no obvious change in Puʻu ʻŌʻō activity. The vent continues to host several incandescent outgassing crater vents, which were first noted at the beginning of July. Low levels of background seismicity also persist.

Webcam imagery of the June 27, 2014 lava flow show breakouts in an area from 0.6 to 5 miles northeast of Puʻu ʻŌʻō, according to HVO. Breakouts in the distance are making their way into a forest area along the flow field.
