HPD Weekly DUI Statistical Breakdown

Seventeen motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways between May 11 and May 17. Of the 17 arrests, three were involved in traffic accidents. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly statistical report.

Thus far in 2015, DUI arrests have seen a decrease of 23.3 percent from the same time period last year. A total of 372 DUI arrests have been reported this year, compared to 485 during the same time in 2014.

Over the past week the weekly DUI total by district is as follows: Hamakua, 0; North Hilo, 0; North Hilo, 0; South Hilo, 7; Puna, 5; Ka’u, 0; Kona, 5; South Kohala, 0; and North Kohala, 0.

Major accidents have decreased up to this point in 2015. So far there have been 556 major traffic accidents in 2015, compared to 624 during the same time in 2014, a drop of 10.9 percent.

Traffic fatalities have been elevated by 50 percent this year. Nine traffic fatalities have occurred on the Big Island, compared to six during the same time in 2014. One of the fatalities was related to drugs and three were related to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

HPD will maintain patrols and continue DUI roadblocks throughout the island.
