Kilauea Summit Update – 5/12/15

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports Tuesday morning that activity at Kilauea’s summit is still showing a deflationary trend in tilt. The activity has continued to decline since Friday. Officials say the lava lake levels were about 10 yards below the Overlook crater on Monday afternoon.

Continued heightened levels of seismicity remain elevated below Kilauea’s summit and upper East and Southwest Rift Zones.

At Puʻu ʻŌʻō, a tiltmeter on the north flank has recorded minor fluctuations in tilt over the past 24 hours. HVO scientists say thermal camera imagery on the north rim of Puʻu ʻŌʻō’s main crater did not show any active flows on the crater floor. In addition, nighttime incandescence continues to show that lava was present in the collapsed pit to the west of the main crater.

HVO noted Tuesday that June 27 lava flow surface flows northeast of Puʻu ʻŌʻō continue to remain active, based on webcam observations.
