Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park Seeks Public Comment on Park Plan

Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is seeking public comment on its recently released draft of the general management plan, wilderness study, and environmental impact statement (GMP/WS/EIS) beginning May 1.

The 548-page document provides three alternatives for the park for review, each utilizing a different approach for protecting and managing park resources, using facilities, and providing access and experiences to visitors ranging from locals, off-islanders, and students of all ages.  The alternatives also incorporate Native Hawaiian values like mālama ʻāina (taking care of the land) and kuleana (responsibility).

The plans came about through five years of public comment, research, field assessments, stakeholder discussions, and Native Hawaiian consultation, and are based on addressing urgent issues, legal mandates, and public comment.

The park is encouraging the public to consider the alternatives and provide comment in shaping how the park will be protected and managed over the next 20 years.

A talk-story will be held at the Kīlauea Visitor Center on June 10 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. to answer questions and take comments.  Additionally, a formal wilderness hearing will be held during the meeting to receive public comment on the wilderness study.
