Finalists for the 2015 ‘Olelo Youth Xchange Student Video Competition, presented by Sony, have been narrowed down.

A record 892 students entered submissions to the challenge, now in its 12th year.  Finalists include students from public, charter, and private schools on the Big Island, Maui, Kaua’i, and Oahu. These finalists were selected by a judge’s panel, including local news media, film-making professionals, and subject experts with subject impact and technical production in mind.

Three student videos from Big Island schools have made the cut. Two Honoka’a Intermediate School videos were selected in both the animation and mini-documentary categories: “Weird Loud and Proud” and “Mission Possible,” respectively. Hilo High School also has a finalist submission with their Malama the Aina category video, titled “Malama Aina.”

Forty-four divisional category winners will be handed out on May 4 during the Awards Gala at the Sheraton Waikiki Resort. The awards ceremony will also be broadcast through a live cablecast beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Channel 54. Winners in each of the categories will receive a high-definition Sony digital camera for their school.
