Arrest Made in Friday Police-Involved Shooting
A Puna man involved in an incident Friday afternoon in which an officer-involved shooting took place is now in police custody.
The Hawai’i Police Department has identified the suspect as 24-year-old Daesyn Pacheco-Muragin.
According to police, detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Division executed a search warrant at the Mountain View home of Pacheco-Muragin at 6:30 a.m. Sunday. During the search, police arrested the suspect on two outstanding bench warrants. In addition to the bench warrants, officers arrested him on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, four counts of first-degree terroristic threatening and one count of attempted criminal property damage.
Authorities say Pacheco-Muragin has no apparent injuries from the Friday shooting incident. Police took him to the Hilo police cellblock as detectives continue to investigate.
On Friday just before 1 p.m., a Puna patrol officer noticed a suspicious car at the end of Mokuna Street in the Royal Hawaiian Estates subdivision. The vehicle drove directly towards the officer’s vehicle and swerved at the last moment as it continued to flee.
Police say that not long after, the vehicle was seen traveling north into oncoming traffic in the southbound lane of Highway 11 in Mountain View. The vehicle drove through an active road construction site and proceeded to drive directly at an officer who was on the ground directing traffic. The officer, in response, fired three shots toward the car. The vehicle was struck by the shots and continued to head toward Hilo.
The Police Department’s Area I Criminal Investigations Section is conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting, which is standard practice in any shooting that involves an officer. In addition, the Office of Professional Standards is conducting an administrative investigation.
