PGV Cited for August Hydrogen Sulfide Release

Puna Geothermal Venture has been issued a Notice and Finding of Violation and Order from the Hawai’i State Department of Health Clean Air Branch.

The operational, emission, and notification violations come following the unabated release of hydrogen sulfide on Aug. 7, 2014.

Violations were both documented and confirmed in excess emissions reports that were submitted to the department by PGV, as well as during inspections conducted by DOH staff.

PGV has been penalized with a $23,700 fine for the alleged violations. PGV has the oppritunity to request a hearing to contest the violation.

The DOH Clean Air Branch monitors air quality and regulates businesses that release pollutants into the air. Monitoring and regulation includes the review and approval of air permits, evaluation and enforcement of state and federal air standards, conduction of inspections, and investigation of reported incidents related to outdoor air quality.

According to officials, the air permit process ensures companies comply with state and federal emission standards to minimize air pollution impacts of the public.
