HPD Weekly DUI Statistical Breakdown
Twenty-five motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roads between Dec. 22 and Dec. 28. Of the 21 drivers, four were involved in traffic crashes. The statistics come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly statistical breakdown of DUI offenses on the island.
This year, there have been 1,152 DUI arrests so far this year, compared to 1,363 DUI arrests at the same time in 2013, an overall decrease of 13.8 percent.
Major accidents are on the rise this year, with an overall increase of 14 percent. There have been 1,513 major accidents on Big Island roadways this year, compared to 1,327 major accidents during the same time period last year.
A major decrease in traffic related fatalities was seen this year as compared to last year. There have been 11 fatalities throughout the year, compared to 25 fatalities last year.
Six of the 11 fatalities that have occurred this year were related to drugs, alcohol, or a combination of the two.
Officers will continue roadblocks and patrols island wide.
