$1.06 Million in Renovations for Volcano Transfer Station

Volcano’s new transfer station broke ground Tuesday.

According to the County of Hawai’i, the $1.06 million project will expand the current transfer station and complete structural repairs.

The county hopes that the new transfer station design will encourage recycling and will be able to accommodate green waste recycling, a HI-5 redemption site, and reuse operations in the years ahead.

“This project is part of our continuing effort to encourage all of our communities to reuse, recycle, and protect the environment,” said County of Hawai’i Mayor Billy Kenoi. “We want to make recycling as convenient as possible so that more and more people will participate.”

The project was designed by Green Aina Engineering, using a design-build approach that allows the contractor, William C. Loeffler, to utilize lower-cost construction techniques.

According to the county’s Department of Environmental Management, the transfer station was in need of a makeover because the current facility was built with older construction techniques, including the use of a wooden retaining wall. The wall has now deteriorated to the point where it is no longer structurally sound.

The project is expected to be completed by early summer of 2015.
