Groundbreaking Next Week for $22M Pahoa District Park

A public ceremony will be held next week for the groundbreaking of what is described as the biggest recreational project in the history of the county.

The $22.3 million first phase of the Pahoa District Park project will more than double the size of the Pahoa park, which currently contains Pahoa’s pool, community center, skate park and ball fields.

The groundbreaking will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, July 31, at the park.

Nan Inc., the contractor awarded the bid for the district park’s first phase, is scheduled to start clearing and grading the site on Aug. 4, said Department of Parks and Recreation spokesman Jason Armstrong.

Facilities to be built over the next year include a covered play court building; two lighted baseball fields; two multi-purpose fields, one of which will be lighted for nighttime use; a keiki playground, concession building, new comfort station, ADA accessible walkways and parking areas.

When completed, the Pahoa District Park will cost an estimated $54 million.
