Public Reminded About Laws Pertaining To Mopeds

Police have issued a reminder to the public about the law pertaining to the use of mopeds on county and state roadways.

They said moped riders are to be granted all the rights of any other motor vehicle.

If a moped is traveling at less than the normal speed of traffic moving in the same direction, it shall ride as far right on the roadway as practicable, police said.

Also:

• Where provided, and not prohibited, moped drivers shall use the bicycle lane
• When coming to an intersection, a moped rider should occupy the designated lane specific to its intended ,and has the same rights as any other motor vehicle in that lane
• Eyewear is required when operating a moped
• A Hawaii State driver’s license is also required, and no person under 15 years of age is permitted to operate a moped on a state highway or public property
• When several mopeds are riding on the roadway together, they are to travel in a single file
• No passengers are allowed on a moped, with the exception of a three-wheeled moped designed to seat a passenger

Capt. Samuel Jelsma of the Puna District said motorists are being reminded to share the road with mopeds – especially on Highway 130, also known as the Keaau-Pahoa Highway, which is currently undergoing road construction for widening between the Keaau Transfer Station and Shower Drive.
