Three Post Offices Offering Late Tax-Day Collections

Procrastinating tax filers take note: Three post offices on the Big Island will offer late collection of mail on Tuesday, April 15.

All post offices will close at their regular times, but those three – among 26 across the state – will have blue collection boxes labeled with bright orange signs signifying that tax forms deposited there by midnight will receive April 15 postmarks.

The ones designated on the Big Island include the main Hilo Post Office located near the airport, the Kailua-Kona Post Office and the Kamuela Post Office.

All non-designated post offices will collect mail Tuesday at their regular times.

Postal officials also are reminding mailers to ensure the adequate postage is attached.

First-class postage for a one-ounce letter is 49 cents. Large envelopes and items weighing more than one ounce, or greater than ¼-inch thick, require additional postage; check with a postal clerk to determine correct postage, or check the Postal Service web site at www.usps.gov for a postage rate calculator.

Officials noted that tax agencies do not accept postage due mail and tax returns bearing insufficient postage will be returned — meaning taxpayers may be penalized for filing late tax returns.
