Hilo Lagoon Centre is commemorating its 55th anniversary and celebrating its place in Hilo’s evolving community with a presentation and historical display on Monday.

State Rep. Sue Keōhokapu-Lee Loy is visiting Hilo Lagoon Centre to present a certificate recognizing Hilo Lagoon’s enduring contribution to the history, culture, and community of downtown Hilo.

Following the presentation, Keōhokapu-Lee Loy will receive a tour of the historical display, which features historical materials and memorabilia. The event offers residents and visitors an opportunity to reflect on the property’s past while appreciating its ongoing role in downtown Hilo.

Originally opened in 1971 as the Hilo Lagoon Hotel, the property has welcomed generations of residents and visitors. Over the years, the hotel was associated with notable entertainers and personalities, including John Wayne, Frank Sinatra Jr., and Melveen Leeds.

Today, Hilo Lagoon Centre continues that legacy as a residential and business hub distinguished by its mid-century architecture, beautiful lagoon setting, Japanese garden roots, and spirit of aloha.

The presentation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Hilo Lagoon Centre on Monday, Oct. 26.
