An elderly Hilo man is in critical condition after he was involved in a 2-vehicle traffic crash the evening of Oct. 9 in Hilo.

Police responded shortly after 8:30 p.m. Friday to a call on Ponahawai Street, between Komohana and Kapiʻolani streets, in Hilo. They determined a 2016 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was traveling up Ponahawai Street when the vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a 2013 Toyota Corolla 4-door sedan traveling down Ponahawai.

The 77-year-old man driving the pickup truck was unresponsive at the scene and transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition.

A 59-year-old woman driving the sedan also was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where she was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police do not think speed, alcohol and/or drugs are factors in this crash.

Hawaiʻi Police Department East Hawaiʻi Traffic Enforcement Unit responded to the scene and assisted with the investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Officer Brian Kohara at 808-935-3311 or via email at Brian.Kohara@hawaiipolice.gov. Anonymous tips can be provided to Crime Stoppers at 808-961-8300.
