9 motorists arrested for DUI during week of Sept. 21-27 on Big Island roads

Hawai‘i Island police continue to crackdown on people who choose to drive under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways.

Police during the week of Sept. 21-27 arrested 9 motorists for DUI. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident; none were younger than 21 years old.

So far this year, There have been 582 DUI arrests so far this year, a 13.78% decrease compared with 675 during the same period last year.

Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services Section also reviewed all updated crashes, finding a total of 718 major crashes so far in 2026, a 4.65% decrease from 753 during the same time last year.

As of Sept. 27, A total 23 fatal crashes resulting in 25 total fatalities were recorded as of Sept. 27 on Big Island roadways, a 43.75% increase for fatal crashes and 47.06% increase for fatalities, respectively, compared with 16 total fatal crashes that resulted in 17 fatalities during same time period in 2025.

Police report DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
