18 motorists arrested for DUI week of Sept. 14-20 on Big Island roadways

Hawai‘i Island police continue to crack down on people who choose to drive under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways.

Police arrested 18 motorists for DUI during the week of Sept. 14-20. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; none were younger than 21 years old.

There have been 573 DUI arrests so far in 2026, an 11.98% decrease compared with 651 during the same period last year.

Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found a total of 713 major crashes so far this year, a decrease of 2.73% compared with 733 major crashes during the same time frame last year.

There have been 23 fatal crashes resulting in 25 fatalities as of Sept. 20 on Big Island roadways, increases of 43.75% and 47.06% for fatal crashes and fatalities, respectively, compared with 16 fatal crashes resulting in 17 fatalities during the same time period last year.

(NOTE: Another fatal crash that killed one person happened Oct. 2 in Mountain View, after this information was released by Hawai‘i Police Department.)

Police report DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
