Big Island man arrested after fatal weekend shooting in Puna District
Hawai‘i Island police responded to the incident after receiving a call from a man reporting he'd been attacked and that he shot another man.
A man from Kea‘au was taken into custody in connection with a shooting that left a 41-year-old dead in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision on Saturday, Sept. 19.
Hawai‘i Police Department’s Puna patrol officers were initially called to the 15-1500 block of Makuʻu Drive in Keaʻau at 10:18 p.m. after a man, later identified as Bryant Scott Guevarra, 49, called police and reported that he had been attacked and had shot another man.
When officers arrived on scene, they found the unresponsive male, later identified as 41-year-old Jose Adame Romero of Keaʻau, suffering from multiple apparent gunshot wounds.
“Officers immediately initiated lifesaving measures until Hawai‘i Fire Department personnel arrived and determined that the victim had succumbed to his injuries,” according to a news release from police.
Romero was pronounced dead at 10:44 p.m.
Guevarra was still at the scene when police arrived and was taken into custody on suspicion of second-degree murder.
He was later transported to the East Hawai‘i Detention Facility as detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section continue the investigation.
An autopsy will be scheduled to determine the exact cause and manner of Romero’s death.
