Big Island police arrest 16 motorists for driving under the influence during week of Sept. 7-13

Hawai‘i Police Department continues its crackdown on motorists who choose to drive on Big Island roadways while under the influence of an intoxicant.

Police arrested 16 drivers for DUI during the week of Sept. 7-13; six were involved in traffic crashes and two were younger than 21 years old.

A total of 555 DUI arrests have been made so far this year on island roads, an 11.76% decrease from 629 by the same time in 2025. (Arrests by district numbers or an updated “Arrests by District” graphic were unavailable.)

Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services Section also reviewed all updated crashes and discovered a total of 701 major crashes so far this year on the Big Island compared with 716 major crashes, or 2.09% fewer than the same time period last year.

There had been a total of 22 fatal crashes resulting in 24 fatalities as of Sept. 13 on the island compared with 16 fatal crashes resulting in 17 fatalities by this time in 2025, representing a 37.5% increase in fatal crashes and 41.18% for fatalities.

Police report DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
