Flood watch in effect for Hawaiʻi Island through this evening

A flood watch remains in effect through Thursday evening for the entire island because of the possibility of heavy rainfall from the remnants of what was Tropical Storm Norbert.

National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu report that conditions are favorable for flooding. Flooding may not happen, but is possible. 

Heavy rain with the potential for thunder storms is forecast from late morning through this afternoon.  Specifically, residents in Kaʻū, Puna, Hilo, and Hāmākua should monitor conditions and be prepared to take action

Residents in flood prone areas should be prepared for heavy rains and potential flooding and be aware that road closures may occur without notice. If lightning threatens your area, the safest place to be is indoors.

The public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Do not attempt to cross flowing water in a vehicle or on foot; turn around don’t drown.
