2 charged in connection with string of Kona car break-ins
Hawai‘i Island police earlier this week arrested and charged two people in connection with a series of car break-ins during August in Kona.
Reid Pangelinan of Waimea and Jacqueline Barnes-Carrick of Kailua-Kona, both 35 years old, were arrested and charged with multiple offenses following an investigation into five break-ins.
Pangelinan was charged with with:
- 5 counts first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.
- 2 counts second-degree theft.
- 4 counts third-degree criminal property damage.
- Habitual property crime.
- Third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug (methamphetamine).
- Second-degree promotion of a detrimental drug (marijuana).
His total bail was set at $100,000.
Barnes-Carrick was charged as an accomplice with:
- 5 counts first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.
- 2 counts second-degree theft.
- 4 counts third-degree criminal property damage.
Her total bail was set at $39,000.
Kona patrol officers responded shortly after 2 p.m. Aug. 31 to the 78-100 block of ʻEhukai Street in Kona to a report of a vehicle possibly involved in an earlier break-in.
Officers upon their arrival located numerous items thought to be recently stolen inside the vehicle. Pangelinan and Barnes-Carrick were subsequently placed under arrest, and the vehicle was recovered as evidence.
Personnel from Hawai‘i Police Department Area II Criminal Investigation Section assumed responsibility for the investigation. Their follow-up investigation included contacting multiple victims and executing a search warrant.
They recovered numerous stolen items determined to be connected with five separate vehicle break-ins.
Detectives while executing the search warrant also recovered suspected narcotics, including about 31.2 grams of marijuana and 0.5 grams of methamphetamine.
Hawai‘i Police Department reminds the public to remove valuables from unattended vehicles and secure vehicles when left unattended.
