3-year-old Mountain View girl critically injured when struck by truck rolling back in driveway
A 3-year-old Mountain View girl was critically injured the morning of Aug. 22 when she was struck while walking behind a truck that was rolling back in a driveway at a Mountain View home.
Hawai‘i Island police responded just after 10 a.m. Saturday to a report of a single-vehicle collision in the driveway of the residence in the 11-3000 block of Hibiscus Street in the Puna community.
Preliminary investigation determined a black 2004 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was parked in the driveway, with a 17-year-old girl, 6-year-old boy and 3-year-old boy inside. The truck was inadvertently shifted into neutral, causing it to roll back and strike the toddler, who was walking behind it.
The Tacoma then struck a parked, unattended vehicle before coming to a rest after hitting a tree.
No one else was injured.
The child was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center with critical injuries and subsequently taken to Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women and Children on O‘ahu for further treatment.
Police do not think alcohol and/or drugs were factors in the collision.
Hawai‘i Police Department Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit initiated a major traffic collision investigation, which is ongoing.
