A 64-year-old man from Hot Springs, Ark., was charged with sexual assault following investigations into two incidents in West Hawaiʻi by Hawaiʻi Island police.
Timothy Efird is charged with first-degree and second-degree sexual assault. His initial bail was set at $300,000 and he made his initial court appearance on Aug. 7 in Kona District Court.
His bail was maintained, with conditions, and he remains in custody. He was ordered to appear at 3 p.m. on Aug. 11 in Kona District Court for a preliminary hearing in the case.
Prosecutors informed the court during Efird’s preliminary hearing that the case was indicted in Kona Circuit Court. The Circuit Court allowed the Arkansas man to post a surety bond of $55,000 and be released.
He also was ordered to not contact, threaten, harm or harass the complainant or her minor children and not to leave the state. Efird also was ordered to appear in Kona Circuit Court again at 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 12.
