UPDATE: Previously closed portion of Hāmākua roadway reopen to traffic

Update at 10:07 a.m. Aug. 9, 2026: Hawai‘i Police Department notified the public shortly after 7 a.m. Aug. 9 that Kapuna Road, which was previously closed between Highway 19 and Old Māmalahoa Highway in Hāmākua in East Hawai‘i, reopened to all traffic.

Story originally posted at 6:49 p.m. Aug. 8, 2026: Hawai‘i Police Department advises motorists to AVOID Kapuna Road, between Highway 19 (Hawai‘i Belt Road) and Old Māmalahoa Highway, because of downed utility lines across the roadway.

The public is advised to stay away from the area for at least the next 6 hours.
