Suspect formally charged with attempted murder following shooting in Puna
The 35-year-old is scheduled to make his initial appearance in Hilo District Court today.
A man from Mountain View was officially charged with second-degree attempted murder after being taken into custody on Aug. 4 for reportedly shooting a 53-year-old man.
Kawika Ah Nee, 35, appeared in Hilo District Court on Thursday for an initial appearance on the following offenses:
- Second-degree attempted murder
- Carrying or use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony
- Place to keep ammunition
His bail was maintained at $1.753 million, according to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney.
The charges stem from a shooting that occurred in the early morning hours of Aug. 4. At 1:37 a.m., Puna patrol officers responded to a report of a man who had been shot multiple times in front of a residence in the 18-1200 block of Waikiki Street in the Livingston subdivision in Mountain View.
The victim, a 53-year-old man from Hilo, was transported by ambulance to Hilo Benioff Medical Center in critical condition before being flown to O‘ahu for further treatment.
Later that morning, Ah Nee was located and arrested without incident. Hawai‘i Police Department’s Area I Criminal Investigation Section is continuing the investigation.
Attempted murder in the second degree, the most serious charge, carries a penalty of life in prison with the possibility of parole.
