Iconic Mexico Navy training ship’s historic visit to Honolulu marks its return to international waters

Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Hawaiʻi and its partner Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco are honored to announce the arrival of ARM Cuauhtémoc, Mexico’s internationally renowned Navy training ship, later this week.

The historic arrival set for9:30 a.m. Aug. 7 at Pier 10 of Aloha Tower marks the ship’s first international port of call during Cuauhtémoc’s first major training voyage following a tragic May 2025 accident in New York, during which two members of the Mexican Navy lost their lives and others were injured.

An arrival ceremony will welcome the ship’s commanding officer, officers, crew and naval cadets to Hawaiʻi and celebrate the enduring friendship between Mexico, Hawaiʻi and the United States.

There also will be a remembrance honoring the Mexican Navy personnel lost in the 2025 tragedy.

The event is free and open to the public. It’s also part of a weekend welcoming the vessel to Hawai’i, continuing through Aug. 11 with ship tours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. A Cuauhtémoc + HCCH Members Only Reception is also planned for 6 to 8 p.m.

Known internationally as “Mexico’s Ambassador and Knight of the Seas,” the Cuauhtémoc visited ports around the globe since 1982.

The vessel serves as a floating naval academy, preparing future generations of Mexican naval officers while advancing peace, maritime cooperation, cultural diplomacy and international goodwill.

Returning to international waters represents a powerful moment of resilience, remembrance and renewal for Mexico, the Mexican Navy and communities around the world that welcomed the vessel throughout its more than four decades of service.

“This visit extends far beyond the arrival of a ship,” said Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Hawaiʻi Co-Founder and Treasurer Ruben Juarez in a chamber release about the upcoming visit. “It is an international symbol of resilience and friendship. Hawaiʻi has long served as a bridge between cultures and nations across the Pacific, and we are deeply honored that Honolulu will help welcome the ARM Cuauhtémoc back to the world stage.”

Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Hawaiʻi with Consulate General of Mexico is coordinating the Honolulu visit, continuing a longstanding partnership that strengthens diplomatic, educational, cultural and economic ties between Mexico and the islands.

Thousands of Hawaiʻi residents and visitors are expected to participate in the welcoming activities and public tours, making the visit one of the most significant international maritime and cultural events this year in Honolulu.
