Police carry a cross for 5 miles in honor of fallen officer Bronson Kaliloa
Officers from the Puna and Hilo patrols walked a cross made of ʻōhia to honor the most Officer Bronson Kaimana Kaliloa, who was killed in the line of duty in 2018.

Officer Bronson Kaimana Kaliloa was 46 when he was killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop in Upper Puna.
On the evening of July 17, 2018, Kaliloa and other officers responded to a traffic stop of a wanted individual in the area of Kūkui Camp Road in Mountain View. As officers approached the vehicle, the fugitive fired multiple shots at Kaliloa, striking him in the neck and leg.
He was transported to Hilo Medical Center, where he died at 12:45 a.m. on July 18, 2018.
Kaliloa was the most recent officer to be killed in the line of duty. The Hawaiʻi Police Department typically hosts the Bronson Kaliloa Memorial Relay Run to honor him.
According to police officers, there were no plans for the anniversary, so they organized a five-mile walk on Saturday, which included carrying a cross made of ʻŌhiʻa.
Officers from the Puna and Hilo patrols walked the cross from the Keaʻau Station to Kaliloa’s memorial in Mountain View.
Kaliloa’s former co-workers spoke highly of him, praising him as not only a great person to work with but “one of the finest human beings around.”
