UPDATE: Police report Highway 19 near Kaʻawaliʻi Gulch reopen to all traffic

Update at 7:17 p.m. July 8, 2026: Hawaiʻi Police Department reports Hawaiʻi Belt Road, or Highway 19, at Kaʻawaliʻi Gulch in East Hawaiʻi is reopen to all traffic.

Police thank motorists for their cooperation while that portion of the roadway was closed.

Original post 6:16 p.m. July 8, 2026: Hawaiʻi Police Department advises Big Island motorists to AVOID for at least the next hour Hawaiʻi Belt Road, or Highway 19, near Kaʻawaliʻi Gulch.

One lane is closed because of a traffic crash. Traffic is being contraflowed.
