Temporary traffic changes are coming to Kīlauea Avenue in Hilo as part of the Safe Routes to Waiākea Schools improvement project.

The federally funded project is located between Ohea and Pūʻainakō streets and includes installation of concrete sidewalks, drainage improvements, retaining walls, curb ramps, driveway reconstruction and utility adjustment/relocation.

Work begins July 6.

One-lane closures and lane shifts will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday throughout the duration of the project. Traffic will be modified to maintain one lane of travel in each direction during construction hours.

Motorists are advised to expect delays, use caution when traveling through the work area and allow for additional travel time.

The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2027.
