Two plant protein products recalled from Hawaiʻi shelves due to potential plastic contamination
Consumers urged to verify if they possess MorningStar Farms Buffalo Chik’n Nuggets or Hot and Spicy Sausage Patties, which are distributed to stores nationwide.

MorningStar Farms has issued a recall for its Buffalo Chik’n Nuggets and Hot and Spicy Sausage Patties due to the potential presence of plastic pieces, which may cause injury or pose a choking hazard.
According to the Hawaiʻi Department of Health Food and Drug Branch, the recalled products were distributed nationwide, including retailers such as Safeway, Times Supermarket and Don Quijote in Hawaiʻi.
The Food and Drug Branch is working with local stores to ensure that the recalled product is no longer available for sale. The recalled product information is as follows:
- MorningStar Farms Buffalo Chik’n Nuggets: Size: 10.5 ounces, UPC: 0028989101105, Best If Used By Date: July 7 and July 8, 2027
- MorningStar Farms Hot and Spicy Sausage Patties: Size: 8 ounces, UPC: 0028989100948, Best If Used By Date: July 5, July 6 and July 7, 2027
Hard or sharp foreign objects in food may cause traumatic injury, including laceration and perforation of tissues of the mouth, tongue, throat, stomach and intestine, as well as damage to teeth and gums. There have been no reported cases of injury or illness to date in Hawaiʻi.
The Food and Drug Branch advises consumers to verify that they possess the recalled product and to stop using it immediately. Consumers who purchased the affected product should discard it and contact the company for a full refund.
