Flood advisory issued for northern parts of Hawai‘i Island, road flooding reported in Pahala

The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for North Kohala, Hamakua, North and South Hilo, Puna and Ka‘ū Districts.

Hawaii Police Department reports the east end of Wood Valley Road in Pahala is closed due to flooding. No alternate routes available.

At 4:15 a.m., Radar indicated heavy rain from Upolu Point to Mountain View to South Point. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 1.5 inches per hour. Some locations that will experience flooding include Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Kapa‘au, Honoka‘a, Volcano, Glenwood, Mountain View, Hawaiian Acres, Kea‘au, Papa‘ikou, Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, Pepe‘ekeo, Honomū, Orchidland Estates, Hakalau, Ninole, Laupahoehoe, Wood Valley and Pāhoa.

The advisory has been extended until 10:30 a.m. Impacts include minor flooding on roads, poor drainage areas, and in streams.
