UPDATE: Fatalities confirmed following crash that closed portion of highway in Hilo

Two people were killed in a vehicle crash this afternoon on Daniel K. Inouye Highway in North Hilo, Hawai‘i Island police confirmed.

The highway near mile marker 26 was reportedly closed to traffic at 12:13 p.m. and reopened about an hour later. It is unknown how vehicles were involved or what caused the crash at this time.

The incident is under investigation.
