Students reflect on changes through their art in the 38th annual Young at Art exhibition

The annual “Young at Art” juried exhibition recognizes the excellence, creativity, and originality of Hawaiʻi Island students in kindergarten through 12th grade from all public, charter, private, and home schools.

This year’s theme was “SHIFT,” an open prompt to help students reflect on changes. Whether dramatic or subtle, visible or invisible, by choice or against our will, students were encouraged to explore these transitions and reactions to them.

The exhibition features a variety of perspectives on the theme. Within the artworks, “SHIFT” is approached literally, figuratively, and explored at various levels of meaning by the student artists.

The 38th “Young at Art” juried exhibition, which is sponsored by the East Hawaiʻi Cultural Center and the Hawaiʻi District Department of Education, has been brought back to a central location after being spread across the island for the past few years.

The exhibition celebrates National Youth Art Month and is on display at the Wailoa Center in Hilo until Thursday, March 26.
