Year of the Horse: Saam Fu brings cultural celebrations to Hilo

The cultural performance group Saam Fu is returning to Hilo this weekend to help celebrate the Lunar New Year and usher in the Year of the Horse.
Organizers said the group will host a series of public performances throughout the community as part of Chinese New Year festivities. The tradition, featuring lion dances, is a crowd favorite and is expected to draw both residents and visitors.
“The lion dance has been a beloved part of Lunar New Year celebrations across Hawaiʻi,” Saam Fu said in a statement. “While Oʻahu has its lion’s share of performances, we are thankful to bring this wonderful tradition to Hilo.”
The Lunar New Year, which marks the start of the new year on the traditional Chinese calendar, is widely celebrated with cultural performances, food and community gatherings.
Organizers cautioned that the schedule is subject to change and encouraged the public to check for updates.
Saam Fu’s planned performances in Hilo are:
Friday, Feb. 20
- 11:30 a.m.: Downtown Hilo shops, starting at Simply Sisters, 250 Kamehameha Ave.
- 2 to 5 p.m.: Downtown Hilo, route to be determine
- 7 p.m.: Hilo Town Market, 69 Waianuenue Ave.
Saturday, Feb. 21
- 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Prince Kūhiō Plaza, 111 E. Puainako St.
- 4 to 6 p.m.: Waiakea Center, 315 Makaala St.
Sunday, Feb. 22
- 10:30 a.m.: Hilo Farmers Market, corner of Kamehameha Avenue and Mamo Street.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to join the community in celebrating Lunar New Year.
