Police: Make sure your Big Game plans are super; fans don’t let fans drive drunk

Super Bowl parties are some of the most attended gatherings among friends and family, so keeping everyone’s safety in mind is the goal.

Super Bowl LX is this Sunday (Feb. 8), so Hawai‘i Police Department and U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration teamed up to remind drivers to make their Big Game plans truly super by either planning to have a designated driver or not indulgently imbibe.

People hosting a Super Bowl party should prepare plenty of food and non-alcoholic drink options for guests, especially for designated drivers.

They are the day’s real Most Valuable Players and should keep that commitment from kickoff until time expires.

Hosting a winning party?

  • Encourage guests to designate their sober drivers in advance, and to eat food and drink plenty of water.
  • Reminder: It’s never OK to serve alcohol to minors. If an underage person drinks and drives, the person who provided the alcohol can be made liable for any damage, injury or death caused by the underage driver.

The real MVPs!

  • Designated drivers should commit to a sober evening.
  • If a designated driver is attending a party or is at a bar or restaurant, they should enjoy the food, company and nonalcoholic drinks. Their positive influence could help keep others on the right track.

Police will be out in force to keep island roads safe.

Everyone is urged to celebrate Super Bowl LX safely by making a plan before festivities begin. The most important step is having a sober ride in advance, whether that means designating a sober driver, using a taxi service or calling for a rideshare.

Because alcohol clouds a person’s judgement, designated drivers should be prepared to help others who failed to plan ahead find a safe and sober way home.

Community members are also encouraged to report suspected impaired drivers to local law enforcement.

Make sure your drive to the end zone is 100% sober if you plan to get behind the wheel.
