UPDATE: High wind warning canceled for Big Island summits of Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa
Update at 5:29 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4: A high wind warning that was previously in place through 6 p.m. today (Feb. 4) for the Big Island summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa was canceled.
National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu report winds atop the mountains have lowered below warning thresholds.
Story originally published at 7:27 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2: A high wind warning is in effect for Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa summits till Wednesday at 6 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service, west winds are expected to increase to 40 to 60 mph with stronger gusts. Travel in the area will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.
Winds this strong can make driving and walking dangerous. The winds can forcefully open doors and damage hinges or slam doors shut, possibly causing injuries.
Hazardous driving conditions due to powerful cross winds will pose a serious risk for drivers, especially for lightweight and high-profile vehicles.
Loose outdoor items should be brought inside or secured properly.
