Police have identified the man who died in a single-vehicle crash early Thursday morning in Hilo as 20-year-old Jordan Grant of Hilo.

On Jan. 29, officers responded to a report of a traffic collision at 12:07 a.m. on Pauahi Street near Piopio Street. Investigators said Grant was driving a 1998 silver Honda Civic eastbound on Pauahi Street at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to skid and strike a metal railing on the Pauahi Street bridge.

Grant, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was found unresponsive at the scene.

Fire and medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at 12:23 a.m. His death marked the Big Island’s third traffic-related fatality of the year.
