UPDATE: All lanes open on Māmalahoa Highway near 56-mile marker in South Kohala

Update at 1 p.m. Dec. 31: The Hawaiʻi Police Department has opened all of Māmalahoa Highway after clearing downed wires that fell about 12 hours ago near the 56-mile marker.

Original at 6:30 a.m. Dec. 31: Hawai‘i Police Department advises motorists that one lane is open on Māmalahoa Highway near the 56-mile marker in South Kohala.

Road crews continue to work on removing wires that fell on the road earlier today (Dec. 31).

Contraflow traffic was initiated in the area, and the highway is estimated to remain with one lane of traffic for the next several hours.

A traffic crash near Waikelehua Place caused the wires to block both lanes of traffic earlier this morning on Māmalahoa Highway.

Traffic was previously being rerouted through Mana Road and Kamāmalu Street.
