Road closures necessary for Hawaiian Electric to replace utility poles around Big Island

Hawaiian Electric announces upcoming utility work in North Kona, Kaʻū and Hilo. Crews will be replacing utility poles on the following dates:

  • Dec. 11-12 (Kona): Māmalahoa Highway near the Lawai‘a Road intersection will be closed overnight from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Motorists are advised to use Kuakini Highway as an alternate route.
  • Dec. 17 (Kaʻū): The mauka lane of Hawai‘i Belt Road, between Aloha Boulevard and ʻIolani Lane in Ocean View, will be closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Dec. 18-19 (Kona): Māmalahoa Highway north of Keōpū Mauka Drive, between mile markers 6 and 7, will be closed overnight from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.. Motorists are advised to use Kuakini Highway as an alternate route.
  • Dec. 18-19 (Hilo): West Kawailani Street, between Kimo Street and Ho‘onanea Street, will be closed overnight from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.. Motorists are advised to use Haihai Street or West Pūʻainakō Street as alternate routes. Residents who live on Mikihala Street will be able to access their homes during the work period when it is deemed safe to do so.

Flagmen will be at each site to provide traffic control.

Motorists should plan for possible traffic delays and drive with caution when approaching the work zones.
