NAS swimming pool in Hilo to host Red Cross lifeguard classes in January

The Kauaʻi County Department of Parks and Recreation is offering an American Red Cross lifeguard certification course in January at the NAS Swimming Pool in Hilo.

The course, which includes deep-water training, will be held on Fridays (Jan. 2, 9, 16, and 23) from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Participants must be at least 15 years old by the final session to be eligible for certification. They must also pass two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations scheduled from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 29 at the same pool.

Participants should bring a bathing suit, towel, sunscreen, water, snacks, CPR masks for adults and infants, and the Lifeguarding Participant’s manual to each class. A free e-book version of the manual and additional information about prerequisites are available on the Department of Parks and Recreation Aquatics Section website.

The course costs $123, payable in cash at the evaluation, and registration is available by contacting the NAS Swimming Pool at 808-961-8697.
