Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation notifies road users about a scheduled 24/7 closure of the makai lane on Hawaiʻi Belt Road (Highway 19) at the Hakalau Bridge.

The closure will be from Dec. 3-7. It is necessary for the new concrete grout for the bridge repair to cure.

Traffic will be maintained in both directions using alternating traffic control, with Honoka‘a-bound traffic will be contraflowed in the Hilo-bound lane.

Traffic will be controlled by flaggers or a temporary traffic signal, depending on workflow and traffic volumes.

The multiple-day closure is necessary so repairs to the foundation of the bridge can continue in preparation for the overall Hakalau Bridge Rehabilitation Project.

The full bridge rehabilitation project is expected to begin in fall 2027 and anticipated to take 2 years to complete.
