UPDATE: Police report Hawai‘i Belt Road near 19-mile marker is open to all traffic

Update at 7:44 p.m. Nov. 22, 2025: Hawai‘i Police Department reports that Hawai‘i Belt Road, or Highway 19, on the Hāmākua Coast in East Hawai‘i is open to all traffic at the 19-mile marker.

Police thank the public and motorists using the highway for their cooperation.

One lane of the highway in the area of the 19-mile marker was previously closed Saturday evening because of a traffic crash.

Original story posted at 6:41 p.m. Nov. 22, 2025: Hawai’i Police Department advises motorists to avoid Hawai‘i Belt Road, also known as Highway 19, in East Hawai‘i at 19-mile marker for at least the next 2 hours.

A traffic crash has caused one lane of the Hāmākua Coast highway to be closed. A contraflow traffic pattern is in effect, but motorists should make appropriate arrangements, plan for delays and use an alternate route, if possible.
