UPDATE: Highway 19 near Ka‘awali‘i Gulch in Hāmākua open again to all traffic

Update at 12:47 p.m. Nov. 13, 2025: Hawai‘i Police Department reports that Hawai‘i Belt Road, also known as Highway 19, near Ka‘awali‘i Gulch is again open to all traffic.

The Hilo side of the roadway near the gulch was previously closed a little more than an hour because of a vehicle crash.

Police thank drivers, community members and the public for their cooperation.

New closure announced 11:13 a.m. Nov. 13, 2025: Hawai‘i Police Department advises Big Island motorists to AVOID Hawai‘i Belt Road, also known as Highway 19, in Hāmākua for the next hour on the Hilo side near Ka‘awali‘i Gulch because of a vehicle crash.

One lane is closed; drivers should anticipate and expect delays.

UPDATED to reflect opening of Highway 190: The Hawai‘i Police Department reports that Route 190 near Makalei Hawaii Country Club in North Kona is now open to all traffic as of 8:40 a.m.

A portion of the northbound lane of the highway, between mile markers 29-30, was closed for a couple of hours as boulders were blocking the roadway.

The highway has since reopened.
