12 motorists arrested for DUI week of Oct. 6-12 on Big Island roadways

Hawai‘i Police Department continues to crack down on motorists who drive drunk on Big Island roadways.
Police arrested 12 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant during the week of Oct. 6-12. Four of those drivers were involved in traffic crashes; none of the them were younger than 21 years old.
Six of those arrests were made in Kona, the district with the most during the week. Hilo followed with 3, South Kohala with 2 and Puna with 1.
A total of 708 DUI arrests have been made so far this year, a 7.69% decrease from the 767 made during the same period in 2024.

An updated review of all major crashes by Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services Section found 794 major crashes so far in 2025. That’s a 3.25% increase from the 769 major crashes reported by the same time last year.
There have been 16 fatal crashes resulting in 17 fatalities to date on Big Island roadways in 2025 compared with 21 fatal crashes resulting in 23 fatalities by the same time last year, representing a 23.81% decrease in fatal crashes and 26.09% decrease in fatalities.
Police said DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
