South Kona home destroyed in afternoon blaze

A home in Captain Cook was destroyed after a fire on Friday afternoon.

Hawai‘i Fire Department responded to the blaze at 12:56 p.m. on the 92-1800 block of Sea Breeze Parkway. Residents were not home at the time.

When crews arrived on scene, they found a single-story 800-1,000-square-foot home that was 75% involved with flames. Vegetation surrounding the residence was also on fire and started spreading to adjacent properties, threatening two additional structures, according to a new release from fire officials.

Moderate winds in the area led to embers flying into an adjacent vacant property.

Two additional fire companies arrived to assist with extinguishment and water supply. Crews were able to contain the fire to the structure of origin and surrounding brush.

The house was a total loss. Firefighters were able to contain the brushfire to approximately 100 feet by 100 feet. The blaze was under control at 1:48 p.m. and out by 3:55 p.m. Owners/occupants of the residence were not home at the time of the incident. No injuries reported.

Fourteen firefighters responded to the blaze along with 10 apparatus, including engines and tankers.

Cause is currently undetermined and there were know injuries reported.
