Pāhoa students can now access financial services, education during lunch at school
Students in Pāhoa can now gain hands-on experience in financial literacy and banking services with a new CU Hawai‘i Federal Credit Union located inside the school.

Big Island-based financial institution, CU Hawai‘i, in partnership with the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education, opened a new student credit union at Pāhoa High and Intermediate School to provide work-based learning, financial education, and services to students, faculty, and staff.
The branch will be staffed and operated by students employed by CU Hawai‘i as student member service representatives. They will gain work experience, improve their financial literacy, and earn money through this work-based learning opportunity.
“CU Hawai‘i has provided a great opportunity to the students of Pāhoa High and Intermediate School,” Principal Kim Williamson said. “The real-world application of financial literacy will help to strengthen the Puna community and Hawaiʻi Island.”
A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the branch in Pāhoa High and Intermediate School on Monday, Aug. 18. The third CU Hawai‘i student branch now joins those at Waiākea High School, which opened 20 years ago, and Keaʻau High School, which opened last year.
“The student branches reflect our commitment to serving our community by providing financial solutions, empowering futures, and creating a place where every member feels valued and supported, especially the student,” said Luzviminda Martin, CU Hawai‘i Pāhoa branch manager.
